Welcome to our B & B
HOMELY FULLY HOSTED RURAL RETREAT – GATEWAY TO THE CLARE VALLEY, FLINDERS RANGES AND OUTBACK
Peggy’s Retreat is nestled on 9 acres of tree studded pastoral land on the boundary of the Southern Flinders Ranges and the Northern Mount Lofty Ranges. The original pastoral homestead, which has been extended 3 times, was built in the late 1890’s. Peggy’s Retreat is 220km from Adelaide, with the Clare Valley, Burra, Port Pirie, Yunta and Melrose within an hours drive.
Peggy’s Retreat is named in honour of Colin’s late mother. Peggy’s Retreat has panoramic views from the homestead, particularly the north veranda. The various moods of the Narien Range (part of the Southern Flinders Ranges) are on show from dawn to dusk, with the range silhouetted by the magnificent sunset most evenings. If you are able to leave the comfort of your deluxe bed at dawn, the sunrise is often more spectacular than the sunset.
There are no street lights to spoil the view of the millions of stars of the southern sky, with the Milky Way visible to the naked eye. If you are an amateur (or professional) astronomer, the best viewing time is at the new moon. We have a low powered telescope that can be used to take a closer look.
The surroundings are comfortable, the ambience is informal and relaxed and the welcome warm. Relaxation and rejuvenation are the unashamed goals of Peggy’s Retreat. With good food, good wine and good company Peggy’s Retreat offers a unique environment in which to unwind and enjoy the simple pleasures of life. Play a game of snooker or chess, watch your favourite program on Austar or one of the many DVD’s in our collection or read one of over 400 books in our library, the choice is entirely yours. Stroll around our native garden and listen to the resident birdlife, or sit in our “sunset” seat and watch the mood of the setting.
For those who wish to be more active you can cycle on one of the many bike trails in the area or bushwalk one of the many trails including both the Heyson and Mawson Trails which pass close by. If something a bit less strenuous is preferred then there are many driving routes available to explore, some more suited to 4WDs. For those interested in history, the towns of Burra, Mintaro, Terowie, Peterborough, Melrose, Laura and Clare are all within an hours drive of Peggy’s Retreat. Maybe you would like to sample local produce from one of the many wineries, olive groves, or bakeries. Perhaps attend one of the many local events held throughout the year.
